Job Description:

The job description is that of the Director of Music and involves playing for our Sunday services and presiding over a paid professional choir of 6 to 8 members. The choir rehearses on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am and the one service is at 11 am. The music selections of church including preludes, hymns, and postlude are generally very traditional character. In addition to the Sunday services there is a half-hour service on Thursday at noontime. Administrative work regarding music selection and other duties ancillary position of Director of Music are also required. (recommending music; arranging for and overseeing maintenance and/or repair of the church's musical instruments, etc.) The job also includes coordinating the color choir and providing music for special holiday services (Good Friday concert; Maundy Thursday service; Christmas Eve service, etc.) The organs at Old First Church were built by Austin Organs, Inc. in 1930, their opus 1703, comprising a four manual 95 rank instrument in the rear gallery, and a three manual 20 rank instrument in the ceiling over the Chancel. Both instruments could be played from the Rear Gallery console. Tonally, they are typical for their time with an abundance of foundational and orchestral tone of a warm sounding nature. There are however Diapason choruses in both the Great and Swell divisions of the Gallery organ. Originally, the entire Gallery organ except for the Pedal division was under expression, and the entire Chancel organ was under expression. A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in a position comparable to Director of Music is required. Needless to say, excellent organ and piano skills suitable to our Austin 4 manual 75 rank instrument are also required. The ability to work with and direct choir and work with other church professionals is also required.
