Job Description
The Historic Landmark Flatbush-Tompkins Congregational Church of Brooklyn, New York (FTCC), a member of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches is seeking an experienced Organist/Choir Director to move the music ministry of FTCC forward. This person professes a love for Jesus Christ and views worship music as a ministry. The part-time position requires a professional candidate who possesses knowledge of the liturgy as well as strong ability to effectively communicate and network. The Organist/Choir Director will work closely with the pastor, play the organ and piano, and direct the Chancel Choir as well as Youth Choirs. The FTCC music ministry seeks to glorify God and to help the congregation in its worship through a combination of building on our long history of sacred music, as well as reflecting the diverse musical heritage of our congregation and church community.
Job Requirements
The Organist/Choir Director is a resource to support, coordinate and enhance the worship life of the church through congregational choral and instrumental music in the context of the FTCC tradition of sacred music. In this role the duties include:
Plan, direct and perform music for all regular and special services of worship, in consultation with the music committee
Develop and direct a music program that includes the Chancel Choir and Youth choirs
Recruit, encourage and engage participation from the congregation, e.g. Summer Choir
Promote fellowship with other church choirs and encourage collaborative events, e.g. Gospel Fest
Engage instrumentalists as appropriate and in accordance with the music budget
Oversee the use and care of the organ and pianos for recital and practice purposes
The work week will be 20 hours – including Sunday services, mid-week choir rehearsals and related administrative duties
Maintain the music library in an orderly fashion with volunteer(s) from the church
Attend regularly scheduled meetings of staff and appropriate committees
Successful candidate expected to serve as organist at weddings and funerals of congregants (with additional compensation)
Required Skills
Minimum of Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years music related experience
Experience in choral direction and arranging
Ability to play solo instrumental performances of organ, e.g. Prelude and Postlude
Proven ability to perform and direct diverse styles of music
Ability to lead and inspire choir members of all ages, creating an environment where musical training and preparation become a part of maintaining and further building a solid foundation of faith for participants
Excellent communication skills and ability to work and interact well with all ages and demographics
Excellent organizational and administrative skills; strong attention to detail
